The great influx of Puerto Ricans making their way to New York during those years came, of course, of their desire to find the American dream; this hnadily coupled with easy access to the Great White Way and the distinct feeling of being "wanted." Yes, they felt wanted. And why would that be? Because Puerto Ricans can vote in American elections. They can't cast their vote from San Juan, but they can vote here if they are residents of the continental United States. That's simply residents, no need to apply for citizenship. This was the beginning of my voting life and I paid attention. Interesting, thought Congressmen in certain districts. Why don't we bring a few hundred voters up to live here? That could tip the election. Hmmm. Why not? And so, with the cooperation of airlines willing to offer reduced rates for one-way tickets from San Juan to LaGuardia Airport, the immigration was in motion and the Spanish-speaking community was born.
Oppose ACLU’s evil pursuits
It was interesting to read the responses to Mont Poulsen's passionate opinion several weeks ago concerning homosexuals. Mr. Poulsen finds it appalling that USU hired at taxpayer expense someone to "keep homosexuals and transsexuals safe." Since this was in quotes I assume that was what was said in the report. Jami Beth claims it is not a security organization but a guidance and support program. Be that what it may, the government, either state or federal, has no business sponsoring a program like this. Mont asks some simple questions which probably most parents in Cache Valley would ask. The responses in the opinion column are about what I had expected from the liberal contingent in the area. Some think that all of the homosexual community just live their life privately and there is no effort to recruit.
Knee - IR. Out until mid-February
The Chicago Tribune reports that Blackhawks rookie C Jonathan Toews is itching to return from a knee injury that has kept him out since Jan. 1. However, the rookie continues to play it safe. The initial diagnosis is that he would miss 4-6 weeks and it is expected he will be out the full stretch. "I feel like I'm getting pretty close to being able to skate," Toews said. "It's something I don't want to rush yet. I realize I have to be a little more patient, and it will take a little bit longer than what I feel like." (Updated 01/28/2008). .
Not bad, even for the author of Money and Success. Martin Amis is ...
Just like Wayne Rooney, he earned global fame as an outrageously gifted young tearaway, became a magnet for controversy as he matured, and secured a transfer to a leading Manchester institution. But until yesterday no one suspected that Martin Amis earned more per hour lecturing at the University of Manchester than England’s finest footballer does playing up front for United. The celebrated author, who once wrote that "weapons are like money; no one knows the meaning of enough", is contracted at just under £3,000 per hour to teach creative writing at the university. His £80,000 salary obliges him to work a distinctly achievable total of 28 hours a year. In contrast, Rooney makes £50,000 per week — far more than Amis in real terms. But the footballer trains for 30 hours a week, meaning that his hourly rate is 50 per cent lower than the novelist’s.
