Student Bands ‘Masquerock’

It was difficult to hear lead singer and Crimson Executive Leon Neyfakh '07 due to his raspy voice and the poor acoustics, but they made a noble effort to channel Nirvana. By the time their final set came about the crowd seemed to be losing interest in the evening. The lack of alcohol was noted by several of the concert attendees.

With luck, the next presentation of Masquerock will feature a functioning PA system and more Butterfingers and Bud Light. Nonetheless, as Thursday's concert stood as the inaugural Masquerock, it set an impressive precedent for the Masquerocks in years to come.

Pick of the paperbacks

There are fascinating facts galore: our eyes are never still, for example. As well as entertaining, it's philosophically profound: showing how our eyes, far from simply absorbing the world, are tools with which we construct our own reality. Katie Owen

Animal's People Indra Sinha

Indra Sinha reads from Animal's PeopleIndra Sinha on his foul-mouthed protagonist 'I used to be human once,' says Animal, an Indian street-urchin who has gone around on all fours since a catastrophic explosion in an American-owned chemical factory.

The parallels with the infamous Bhopal tragedy could not be clearer and give an angry edge to the writing. But there is humour as well as pathos in this elegantly written parable, shortlisted for the 2007 Man Booker Prize.

Indra Sinha has found a convincingly plangent voice in which to tell his unusual tale.

S.C. bigger after results from Iowa

Obama gets great momentum and the prospect of a wave of young voters and new Democrats paving his way to the nomination. There is also the continuing speculation that supporters of candidates exiting the race -- the latest being Sens. Joe Biden and Christopher Dodd -- could fall to Obama. But New Hampshire on Tuesday could quickly change the picture. It is not Iowa, a neighboring state to Obama's Illinois. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, third in Iowa, is expected to be strong in New Hampshire.* Clinton remains the leader in nationwide polls and has an organization and funding that will carry her into states she is more likely to win than Iowa. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who essentially bypassed Iowa, is also a leader in national polls and is relying on Feb. 5 to catapult him into the lead over Huckabee, former Massachusetts Gov.

LaBarca fights WICC for radio show title

Cumulus Media submitted its application for a service mark on "Italian House Party," on Dec. 27, 2007, and received a certificate of registration from the secretary of the state 15 days later. Cumulus' certificate of registration expires on Dec. 27, 2012.

According to Cumulus' application, the mark is intended for "promotion and publicity," and the first place it was ever used was in Connecticut on Nov. 1, 1989.

In response to a question on the state's application, Linda McCarthy, WICC's business manager, states the mark "appears on signs, in print advertising and online advertising" and that "no" applications to register the mark or any portions of it have been filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The Commercial Recording Division form also asks applicants to confirm "to the best of the applicant's knowledge, no other person has the right to use such mark in this state either in the identical form or as to be likely to cause confusion or to cause mistake or deceive purchasers."

Lastly, the certificate of registration requires the applicant to declare "under the penalties of false statement" that the statements made in the application are true.

Following a flurry of speculation, eBay confirmed that Meg Whitman, its president and CEO, will step down effective March 31 after a highly successful 10-year tenure. She'll remain on the company's board of directors. Whitman is credited with transforming eBay from an obscure San Jose, Calif.-based auction site into an e-commerce powerhouse with more than 15,000 employees and nearly $7.7 billion in revenue.

Housebuilders rise on rate cut hopes

Sales at all of the big three housebuilders have been hit since the summer after the credit squeeze wrung the life out of the "back-to-school" autumn selling season. Housebuilders are hopeful that another cut in interest rates will kick-start the usual spring selling season.

Taylor Wimpey, the merger of the old Wimpey and Taylor Woodrow companies, announced earlier this year that it would start buying back shares when its stock was trading at about 300p.

The prospect of possible cheaper money helped Alliance & Leicester, up 6p to 641p. Moody's, the rating agency, yesterday put the high street bank's financial strength rating and long-term bank deposite ratings on review for a possible downgrade because it is paying more for funds in the money markets.

Shares in the media group Trinity Mirror eased 0.2 per cent to 337.75p on news that it was to start a £175 million ($353 million) share buyback programme following clearance from the pensions regulator for a return of capital to shareholders.
